Adrienne Barbeau Opens Up

Adrienne Barbeau was on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Cretak, a Romulan official.

I had not recognised Cretak as Adrienne Barbeau even though I have seen the episode more than once until seeing the image along with other images when I searched her name after seeing a prompt to watch a December 20 1973 Tonight Show episode with Johnny Carson when Adrienne Barbeau appeared at 28 when she was on the Maude TV Series and just becoming known as an actress.

I then watched Adrienne Barbeau is first for Classic Celebrity Crush and Adrienne Barbeau or Annette Funicello?

Finally I rewatched the Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges (1999) TV episode of Deep Space Nine's last season to see If I could recognise Adrienne Barbeau now that I knew she was in the episode. I did see she is in the credits as Cretak but still had difficulty recognising her becasue of the heavy nature of the Romulan makeup. I also noted that although she is in the episode the main plot involves Dr. Bashir and Sloane of Section 31.

The main features of Adrienne Barbeau that I recognise her by are mostly concealed by the Romulan makeup and costume. So today I saw these images and decided to make this page.

In today's world I don't know if I am supposed to get permission to be safe publishing this page with the images I have included even though they are out there on the Internet already. I believe many if not most would just publish the page and don't deal with it until they get a take down notice.

Besides the permission issue is the issue of whether I have created something that could make some accuse me of misogyny or having an androcentric view. I am a male but not sure that a masculine point of view is at the centre of my world view.

So I now have a page on the private side of my website and wonder If I should publish it.

Disclaimer: I created the text of this document but do not know if the images are public domain or if not what restrictions I might have on their use. All of the images were from a search on Goggle and then selecting the images tab. It apepars that order of images is not consistent on subsequent searches and I don't know how Google search works.

My personal belief is that what Google does with every image it can get it's hands on is far more criminal that the sum of every wrong I have done and will do in my life. That of course is just my opinion ;-)

I do know that the images are from frames of a movie and a TV show. They are a tiny part of the whole of the original video releases and I wish that my use is within my rights.

As I am pondering about my rights to publish this page I am reading about Digital Media Ethics. O.K. A great read but before an answer to the question I started with I have more. Although the article started on the "Ethics of images" it really didn't answer my question. The article is about many ethics questions but not the use issue.

I then went on to Content Curation: Copyright, Ethics & Fair Use by Pawan Deshpande and see four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

  1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
  2. The nature of the copyrighted work
  3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
  4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
Although I am still not sure I have decided to post. On the misogyny or having an androcentric view issue I do know that if accused of either of these in 2017 I am clearly not the worst example.
